Lecture Channel Coding

Channel coding is a data processing technique that is used in digital communication and data storage systems. In such systems errors can occur randomly and channel coding is applied to correct these errors.

Channel coding is done in two steps: The channel encoder generates redundant symbols that are transmitted or stored together with the other data. This redundancy is used by the channel decoder to correct errors in the received data or in the data read from the storage medium. Code design (how to add the redundand symbols) and decoding thechniques (how to use these redundant symbols for error correction) are the two main areas in channel coding. The lecture deals with the basic concepts of channel coding. All code families of great practical importance are introduced and corrsponding methods for decoding are presented.

Channel coding is heavely based on algebra and probability theory. It is a quite theoretical subject and requires a considerable degree of abstract understanding. The lecture shall give some insight into the fundamental concepts and enable the student to apply channel coding in practice.
